Friday Day-Trip to Prestwould
Friday, October 9th
9:00am - 5:30pm
$60 per attendee
Situated in Southside, Virginia, is the family
estate of Sir Peyton Skipwith (1740-1805). Built around 1794 in the
Georgian style, Prestwould Plantation grew to become one of the wealthiest
properties in the United States and remains among the most intact properties
of that period including a rare surviving slave house, landscape and
gardens.
The tour will be led by Dr. Julian Hudson, the Executive
Director of Prestwould and staff members. Advisors for Prestwould have
worked closely with period scholars to restore rooms as they would have looked
variously between 1795 and 1840. The interior design and material culture of
Prestwould is complementary to Blandwood's timeline of 1846-1866, and those
familiar with historic homes will enjoy its architecture, furnishings, social
heritage, and botany.
Prestwould Plantation is noteable for a remarkable range
of decorative history. The legacy includes wallpaper selections, the 1831
French papers, and furniture styles including Windsor, Gothic, Hepplewhite, and
Chippendale); casegoods; beds; and an Empire sideboard featuring crystal
handles.
Lady Jean Skipwith is known for her late eighteenth and early
nineteenth century gardens. The detailed records were utilized for an
interpretive restoration in 1980. Prestwould was declared a National Historic
Landmark in 2003.
This excursion includes comfortable coach transportation to and
from Clarkesville VA, a lunch at the Lamplighter Restaurant, and admission with
a detailed tour of Prestwould. The bus will depart at 9am, and is
scheduled to return to Greensboro by 5pm.
