At A408Studio, we field lots of questions from families interested in "Green building", energy efficiency, sustainability, and passive-solar design and construction.  We love dispensing advice, experience, and opinion - but the truth of the matter is that not every technology, not every technique, not every "energy saver" is worth the money and time on EVERY project.  Each home, each addition, each renovation is different and must be considered as a unique problem.


We have blogged about ductless mini-splits and tankless hotwater heaters in the past, and recommend you consider them for your next project - but they don't fit every solution.

In the last two blog posts, I shared highlights from a talk given by building scientist Michael Blasnik at the Department of Energy's National Weatherization Training Conference, particularly the problems with inaccurate computer models in determining weatherization strategies andeffective home energy improvement measures.
Blasnik also shared his list of common strategies for home weatherization that don’t save much energy. To keep from wasting time chasing windmills and wasting taxpayer money, he recommends strategies to avoid or closely evaluate. These include:
